For customers
Do I need an account to book?
Yes, a free one. There's no fee or subscription. Your account is where you book, track your job, message us, pay and get your files. Create your free account.
How do I book a shoot?
Pick a package on the booking page, add the address and your dates, and send it. You see the full price, the booking fee and the deposit before you send anything. Need something custom? Use the custom quote form.
How do the deposit and balance work?
You pay 50% when you book to hold the date. Online bookings add a booking fee of 5% (at least $5, at most $50). When your files are ready, you get a preview, and the full-size files unlock once the balance is paid.
How can I pay?
Online by credit or debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No checks, payment apps or trades. If Jonnie, the owner, flies your shoot himself, you can also pay him cash in person. Network pilots never take payment.
How do I track my booking?
Sign in to your account. Every update shows up there: when your date is confirmed, the flight time, when the pilot is on site and when your files are ready. The Track button in our emails takes you there too.
Where are my photos and video?
In your account, on the job. Previews show up first. Full-size files unlock once the balance is paid.
What if it's windy or raining?
If weather or wind makes flying unsafe, we move your shoot to the next open date at no charge. The pilot makes the call on the day. If we can't find a workable date within 30 days, we refund your deposit.
How do I reschedule?
Ask from your job in your account, or call or text us. Weather and airspace changes are always free.
What if I need to cancel?
Cancel 48 hours or more before the flight and your deposit is refunded, minus card processing fees. With less than 48 hours' notice, or if no one gives the pilot access, the deposit is kept. The booking fee isn't refunded when you cancel, but it is when we cancel or weather stops the job. Full rules are in our terms.
What if I'm not happy with the files?
Every job has our 30-day guarantee. Tell us what's wrong within 30 days of delivery and we'll fix it or reshoot it for free. If that still doesn't make it right, we refund what you paid.
Can I see proof of my pilot's license and insurance?
Yes. Ask from your job in your account, or call or email us, and we'll send proof of your pilot's FAA license, and their insurance if they have a policy. Need an insured pilot? Choose it when you book, and only a pilot with a verified policy that covers it gets the job. Jobs Apex's owner flies are covered by $1M drone liability insurance. We send the certificate of insurance when you ask us for it.
Why do you need the property owner's permission?
We only fly a property once the owner (or someone with authority over it) has given written permission. If you own it, you agree when you book. Florida law requires this for some drone photos of private property, and we follow the same rule in every state.
What do you do with my information?
We use it only to do your job and run your account. We never sell it. Pilots get only what they need for your job. Read our privacy policy.
Do you book regular photographers and videographers?
Yes. Besides drone work, Apex books photographers and videographers on the ground: home interior and exterior photos, walkthrough videos, headshots and team photos, business photos, and event photos and video. Want the air too? Our Ground + Aerial packages send one pro who shoots inside, outside and from the drone in one visit. Find them under Ground Photo & Video on the booking page, or ask for a custom quote.
Do you charge for travel?
No. There are no travel fees anywhere in the United States.
For pilots
Who can fly for Apex?
Pilots with a current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot certificate, a drone registered with the FAA that broadcasts Remote ID, and a photo of their driver's license and certificate. Insurance is optional but strongly recommended: most customers require proof of insurance, so pilots with a policy on file get far more jobs. Insured or not, you take full responsibility for every flight and any damage it causes. Photographers and videographers who work on the ground can join too, with no pilot license needed. Apex does not work with pilots who have a felony conviction.
I'm a photographer or videographer. Can I join?
Yes. Sign up in the pilot app and choose Photographer or videographer (or Both if you also fly). No pilot license or drone is needed for ground work, and you're only offered ground jobs. You need a photo of your driver's license, at least 3 samples of your own work in your Apex portfolio, and a signed contractor agreement. Pay levels, payouts and the rules are the same as for drone pilots. Insurance is optional, and you take full responsibility for your work and equipment.
How does Apex approve pilots?
Jonnie, Apex's owner, reviews every pro personally: your license, ID, drone or portfolio, and insurance if you have it. Once you're approved and your profile is complete, you're active in the network and get a welcome email.
How do I sign the contractor agreement?
Right in the pilot app when you apply. Read it, type your name and sign with your finger or mouse. A copy is emailed to you and saved in the app.
How are jobs offered?
By email to approved pilots who cover the job's area. Set-price jobs go to the first eligible pilot who accepts. Some custom jobs let you send a counter offer. Reliable Pilots get a 10-minute head start on new jobs.
How much do I keep?
Bronze (0 to 9 jobs) keeps 86%, Silver (10 to 24) keeps 88% and Gold (25 or more) keeps 90%. The Reliable Pilot badge adds 1% (up to 90%). Your pay is locked the moment you accept and never goes down. No subscription and no fees to join.
Is there mileage pay?
Yes. When a job is $150 or more and more than 100 miles from your home, Apex adds a flat $25 automatically. Customers never pay travel.
How and when do I get paid?
By direct deposit through Square Payroll, Apex's payroll company, within 2 business days after Apex approves your files. Once you're approved, you get an email invite from Square Payroll to add your bank account and tax info. Never type bank numbers on our website, and Apex will never ask for them by email or text.
Can I take payment from a customer?
No, never. No cash, checks, payment apps or trades. Customers pay Apex online. If a customer offers, tell them to pay through their Apex account.
What if I can't make a job?
Tell Apex right away through Help & support in the pilot app, or call or text (386) 243-5716, at least 24 hours before when you can, so we can reassign it. Cancelling counts against your reliability, and two no-shows within 90 days pauses your account until Apex reviews it. Weather and safety calls are never held against you.
Can I pause job emails when I'm away?
Yes. Use the availability setting in the pilot app to mark yourself away, and job emails skip you until you're back.
Can I show customers my work?
Yes. Add sample photos or clips to your portfolio in the pilot app, so customers see what you do.
Will Apex remind me about renewals?
Yes. We email you 30 and 7 days before your insurance runs out, and remind you about your drone registration and your Part 107 recurrent training (every 24 months). If your Part 107 or drone registration lapses, new jobs stop until you upload the renewal. If your insurance lapses, jobs that require insurance stop coming to you.
